Added 40 lbs to my bench in 5 months

โ€œI'd stalled out for a year. The right pre-workout plus creatine protocol broke me through the plateau.โ€

I'd been stuck at a 245-pound bench press for almost two years. I lift four times a week, eat enough protein, sleep okay, and my programming is solid (5/3/1 with accessory work). Every cycle I'd add 5 pounds and miss the rep at the new weight, deload, and end up back where I started. The plateau wasn't about effort โ€” it was about not having the recovery capacity to push through.

I was skeptical of "muscle builders" because most of them are creatine + caffeine + a fairy-dusted proprietary blend. RankOfSupplements' bodybuilding category was the first place I read a review that broke down each ingredient's dose against the clinical literature, and the standout for me was that Bulk Extreme had creatine monohydrate at the actual 5g/day maintenance dose, beta-alanine at the studied dose, and ashwagandha for the recovery side. No proprietary blends.

I'd tried creatine separately for years on and off and never really felt a difference, but the framing of the stack โ€” creatine + beta-alanine for the work-capacity side, ashwagandha for the parasympathetic recovery side โ€” made a coherent case I hadn't seen before.

Twelve-week test. I kept everything else the same: same program, same lifts, same sleep, same diet. Week 1-2 nothing. Week 3 I noticed slightly easier rep-quality on bench accessory work โ€” like the third set of dumbbell press at 80 lbs felt the way the second set used to. Week 5 I PR'd at 250. Week 8 hit 255 for a clean single. Week 11 hit 260, which is the number I'd been chasing for two years.

What I think actually happened: the creatine maintenance dose finally saturated my muscles after years of inconsistent supplementation; the ashwagandha pulled my heart-rate variability up about 12 points (I track HRV with a chest strap), which let me handle higher training loads without burning out; and the beta-alanine bought me one extra rep on volume sets, which adds up over a 12-week cycle.

Honest notes: the beta-alanine itch is real for the first two weeks. Spread the dose if it bothers you. I also gained 4 pounds in the first month โ€” about half is creatine water retention, half is the actual hypertrophy from being able to push more volume. If you're cutting, that scale movement is going to mess with you mentally; budget for it.

It's not a magic stack. Without the program and the food, none of this matters. But for someone who's already doing the work and has been spinning their wheels at a strength plateau, getting the foundational supplements at clinical doses (instead of label-dressing) was the unlock for me. RankOfSupplements' methodology call-out about ingredient dosing versus marketing dosing is exactly what I needed to read two years ago.
